By land: The Iraq side of Habur Border Gate is called Ibrahim Khalil. You may pass the border from this gate by your own vehicle or by taxi. After passing the border, the taxi stops at a taxi station right by the border administration building. Here you may hire another taxi to Erbil or any arranged pick-up may be done at this point. A taxi would cost about 90 US Dollars. You may also share the taxi with other passengers. All passengers are registered before the ride and there aren’t any security problems. The taxi service is available for 24 hours to Erbil or other cities. Erbil is about 245 km from the border and it takes about 3,5 hours by taxi.
By Air: The flight takes about 2.5 hours from Ataturk Airport in Istanbul to Erbil. Atlas Airways has four flights a week from Istanbul to Erbil. At the airport passengers are transported to the exit gate of the airport by a bus and from this point you may be picked up or you may hire a taxi to the city.
Brief Information about Transportation in the City
In Erbil, avenues circle the citadel which is the center point. These avenues are intersected by streets starting from the Citadel and going to the outskirts of the city. The circling avenues are called 30, 60, 40, and 100. Our university is on Avenue 60. Public buses on Ave. 60 are marked as 60 in Arabic (٦٠) and one can get on or off the bus right in front of our university. Taxi fares cost about 3000 - 4000 Iraqi Dinars in the city. The Ministry of Culture and an old gym hall called ‘Holy Zard’ is right next to our university, making it easy to find us by taxi if mentioned to the driver.
